Westside Ave came to us in all its 1970’s eccentricities. The house had pristine pistachio colored stucco and siding that matched. The property has a beautiful backyard with large fruit trees that had been growing there for years and large hydrangeas that framed the garden. The interiors shared the same color schemes and wallpaper as its shell. Studio Barnhaus was asked to work on finding a way to bring this house into the new millennium without destroying it’s charm. We were able to add a 550 SF master suite that included a grand master bathroom and walk-in closet. The bedroom featured lots of windows that brought in amazing light and views of the backyard. Modern french doors with glass panels led to a small, private porch facing the garden. Because the new square footage of the house exceeded 500 SF, city regulations required that we utilize environmentally conscious watershed designs. 4 rain barrels flank the exterior of the house to distribute watershed from the roof evenly and safely into the property’s permeable landscape. The rest of the interiors in the existing house were changed to match the modern look of the new master suite addition. Much of the interior walls separating community spaces like the kitchen, dining, and living areas were torn down to create an open floor plan. Clients were willing to part with the green color scheme in order to bring the overall aesthetic of the house into our modern times with classic white stucco. Remnants of Westside’s charm, like wood trims, siding, and its garden, are rehabilitated and provide the perfect balance between old and new.
